AI Security Spending Jumps as Fear Outpaces Proof of Value

Security leaders are funding AI quickly, but adoption pressure is moving faster than evidence that the most popular use cases deliver the strongest results.

What happened

Dark Reading reported that organizations are increasing AI security spending even while many teams still lack clear proof of return. In an IANS and Artico survey of more than 500 CISOs, 69% named AI as their largest priority for new budget dollars. The same reporting cited research showing that the AI use cases organizations pursue most aggressively are not always the ones producing the strongest value.

Why it matters

The pressure is real: attackers can use AI to scale reconnaissance, deception, phishing, and exploitation. That makes defensive AI important—but urgency is not a substitute for governance or measurement. A tool that creates more alerts, hides its reasoning, or cannot be safely stopped can consume budget without improving protection.

What to do

  • Start with one defined security problem and a measurable baseline.
  • Measure investigation time, detection quality, false positives, containment speed, and analyst workload before and after the pilot.
  • Keep a human approval boundary for high-impact actions until the control has proved reliable.
  • Document data access, retention, model limitations, failure handling, and an emergency stop path.
  • Expand the tool only when the evidence shows that it improves defense.

Panther Note

Attackers will use AI. Defenders should use it too—but as a governed guardian at the gate, not as an expensive symbol of progress. Let the evidence decide which tools earn a permanent place.
